a different strategy on impeachment

The House Judiciary Committee and Intelligence Committee have made a thorough and strong case for advancing two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump – for obstruction of Congress and abuse of power.

Rest assured I support these articles of impeachment 100 percent. And, should they reach the House floor, I plan on voting in favor of impeachment.

But I also think the House should retain control of these matters rather than passing them on to the Senate. The Republican leadership – with Mitch McConnell at its helm – is working hand-in-glove with the administration to undermine the process and exonerate Donald Trump without even the pretense of upholding their oath of office.

Keeping the matter in the House will provide time for further evidence and court decisions relative to witnesses to emerge, and will allow issues regarding Trump’s business dealings and tax returns to work their way through the courts.

These forces will add more dimensions to these critical issues and make them clearer to the Senate and the American public.

These articles of impeachment do not expire next week, next month, next year, or for that matter, next Congress. Rather than allow Mitch McConnell to undermine the process with a sham trial in the Senate, we should retain control, continue to gather information, and let the process ripen.

History will thank us.
