This holiday season, let's give the gift of a shared commitment to combating the homelessness and ending the housing crisis.

The holiday season is a time for family, friends, and giving. I know that I am most grateful for the support of my loving family and allies like you. But not everyone is that fortunate. We are in the midst of a housing crisis in Portland and across the country.

If you look around the Rose City, it won't take you long to see this crisis manifested on our streets with thousands of those in our community without a roof over their heads or disposable income for the holiday season. It's unacceptable and we all should play our part to fix it.

Earlier this year, I wrote a comprehensive housing plan titled "Locked out: Reversing Federal Housing Failures and Unlocking Opportunity" which outlines ways I think the federal government should get back in the game of housing policy. We can and must do more to solve this crisis. I'm working to do things like invest in new public housing construction and the rehabilitation of existing units, as well as combating homelessness through housing first policies.

This is one of my top priorities in Congress, and in the new year, we are going to make much-needed progress toward achieving these critical goals. In the meantime, however, we can do our part to help by donating to p:ear – a Portland nonprofit doing incredible work with homeless youth.

This holiday season, let's give the gift of a shared commitment to combating homelessness and ending the housing crisis.
